■ 주제: Hydrogen and Ammonia Safety and Risk
■ 초록: Decarbonisation goals have put hydrogen and ammonia forward as energy carriers and fuels (e.g. for maritime vessels). While there is long experience in safe handling of these gases within the process industry, there will be challenges with the more widespread handling of large quantities of hydrogen and ammonia closer to people, at distributed production sites, transportation, storage facilities, fuelling/bunkering (e.g. in ports), and consumption (homes, cars, heavy-duty trucks, trains, maritime vessels).
Compared to traditional fuels both hydrogen and ammonia are very different, and must be handled differently to ensure safety. For hydrogen safety accident prevention by design may be required rather than detection and mitigation. Traditional approaches to ensure gas safety may be inadequate. Will LH2 releases form a pool, will the vapour be buoyant or dense? The handling of ammonia as pressurized liquid at ambient temperature should be avoided for safety reasons, while refrigerated ammonia might be much safer to handle.
The lecture will give discuss differences in properties of hydrogen and ammonia relative to natural gas, their hazards and their influence on risk and safety.
Examples of accidents and of common misunderstandings important for safety will be given. Typical regulatory regimes for facilities, bunkering and hydrogen fuelled vessels will be discussed.
