Facilities

1. Ship Model Basin: Towing Tank

The towing tank locates at Building 42 as one of the largest test facility in SNU. This tank was built in 1983 and has been used for experimental education and research for wave resistance, ship motion, high-speed crafts, and PMM test. Two carriages are equipped for the model-scale experiment in a wide range of ship speed. A wave-maker is equipped, so that seakeeping experiment in the presence of incident wave can be also carried out.

  • Two towing carriages for regular ships and high speed vessels

    - Regular carriage: 0.1~3.5m/s
    - High-speed carriage: up to 15.0m/s

2. Cavitation Tunnel

Cavitation tunnel is the experimental facility for the performance of propellors and caviation measurement. This facility was donated by Samsung Heavy Industry and locates at the same building of the towing tank.

  • Automatic NC machine for propeller fabrication

3. Structural Experimental Facility

Structural experimental facilities are in Building 41. The facility is used for simple structural experimental for education and researches for material properties, structural dynamics, and fatigue measurement.

  • 1000 KN Universal Testing Machine (Uh-I 1000kN)
    - Test for compression, tension, and buckling loads, experiment for the buckling strength of circular pipes and the crack propagation of flat plates
  • 50 KN Universal Testing Machine (Instron 5800 series)
    - Test a wide range of materials in tension, compression, and strains
  • MTS 500 KN fatigue testing machine
    - Fatigue test machine for high and low cycle fatigue tests, crack propagation tests, crack toughness tests, yield test etc.
4. Sloshing Experimental Facility

his facility is the largest sloshing test facility in the world. In this facility, violent sloshing flows and resultant impact pressure in the model tanks of LNG ships and offshore structures can be measured for LNG CCS design. Fundamental research and industrial projects have been carried out under the support of Korean government, Korean shipbuilding companies, and worldwide organizations.  Motion platforms

5. Two-Dimensional Wave Tank

This is a wave flume to generate 2D waves and current. This facility has been used for fundamental research and education related to offshore hydrodynamics and wave mechanics.

6. Computer Room

There are 40 desktop computers, workstations(SUN, HP, Alpha), server, printer, plotter, scanner, projector, lifelike video conferencing system, UPS(Uninterruptible Power Supply) etc.
